When introducing new math concepts to students, you have likely heard them ask, “When will I ever use this?” and “How does this connect to my life?”

Real World Math: Engaging Students through Global Issues promotes student engagement by providing real-world data on global issues with a focus on practical solutions. The student workbook and corresponding teacher’s guide concentrate on foundational algebra and geometry concepts. All lessons are aligned with National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards and Expectations. Topics range from climate change to financial literacy and build both mathematical knowledge and global perspective.

Each of the 15 lessons in the student workbook includes three components:
  • Lesson handouts
  • Practice worksheets
  • Background reading
All lessons were inspired, researched, designed, reviewed, and field tested by educators, including members of The Math Forum @ Drexel University.

Built into each lesson are:
  • Real-world data
  • Contextual math problems
  • Global and local issues as context
  • Critical thinking
  • Lesson objectives
  • Handouts
  • Supplemental worksheets
  • Engaging readings on global issues
  • Bonus problems
The corresponding Real World Math teacher’s guide contains 15 lessons that include step-by-step instructions, critical thinking questions, key concepts, objectives, NCTM standards alignment, extension ideas, master pages for the student workbook, additional resources, and action project ideas. Activity-based lesson hooks begin each lesson to engage students with new concepts. See the teacher’s guide to download the teacher pages that go with the student lessons on this page. Classroom sets are also available.
