The lack of access to safe drinking water and sanitary latrines is the top public health problem in the world and the number-one cause of childhood deaths. Lack of access to clean water has a devastating effect on women and girls who are traditionally responsible for water collection. Water 1st wants to unite students to fight this worldwide, silent catastrophe.
When you work with Water 1st there are lots of ways to make a difference for people who don't have access to life's most basic needs - safe drinking water and latrines. To get started, visit their Youth Advocacy website to learn more: request a DVD to see and hear about water issues in the developing world, download water questions and answers, and find additional curriculum. Next, you can “adopt a community”. Finally, look on the website to learn about what other schools are doing to tackle this issue and come up with your school's own strategy for making a difference.
When you reach your goal for the community you've adopted, you'll receive a letter from Water 1st thanking you for your donation, a project update and photo of the community you have impacted, and a certificate of accomplishment.
