Put a Roof Over Someone's Head!
Habitat for Humanity Seattle/South King County
http://www.seattle-habitat.org/
Home ownership is one of the primary ways that families in the United States are able to secure a better future for themselves. In King County and around the world, Habitat for Humanity builds simple, decent, and safe homes that low-income families can afford to buy. Habitat for Humanity of Seattle/South King County is a non-profit homebuilder dedicated to creating simple, decent, affordable homes of high quality for low-income families.
Everyone can play a role in helping to put a roof over someone's head as a step towards ending poverty! Every Habitat for Humanity volunteer makes a difference in the lives of our homeowners and helps us reach our goal to end substandard housing here in the United States and around the world. When you volunteer with Habitat for Humanity of Seattle/South King County you have an opportunity to select how you'd like to help, or talk to someone at the volunteer department to design your own project. Some ideas to help you begin are:
Nuts and Bolts Frames – Decorate the outside of the frames using the hardware (nuts/bolts/nails) that go into making Habitat homes. Create a picture for the inside of the frame. Think about what it would be like to be homeless and how important it is to you that you have a home. These can be used as thank you's for volunteers and homeownersSchool Reporter – Youth talk to a partner family about how Habitat has impacted them, write about their experience and publish one of their reflections in a school newsletter/newspaper. This helps all students and their community become involved and educated about what it is like to live in a substandard housing environment.Cards – Groups decorate blank cardstock with pictures of their home and what home means to them and sign the bottom of the card with their name and age. These cards will be used for Thank You cards for volunteers/sponsors.Gifts from scrap wood – Make wooden key holders, picture frames, picture boards, cutting boards or doorstops on site. Site crew collect pieces for the group to pick up. These gifts can be donated to the families at the dedication.Habitat for Humanity Club – Students can form a Habitat for Humanity Club to raise money, share news through a school newsletter or meetings and build on site
