Age group: K-12
Geographic area: Greater Seattle/King County
Join more than 260 schools and ten school districts that have participated in the King County Green Schools Program, improved conservation practices, and received recognition! All K-12 public and private King County schools outside of the City of Seattle are eligible to participate and to receive assistance. Visit King County Green Schools.
The program has three levels:
- Level one focuses on Waste Reduction and Recycling.
- Level two involves Energy Conservation and one optional category from the following list: Environmental Education; Environmental Purchasing; Green Building; Hazardous Materials Management; Litter Reduction; and Transportation Choices.
- Level three focuses on Water Conservation plus one of the optional categories. After a school has completed the program, it will have met specific criteria in Waste Reduction and Recycling, Energy Conservation, Water Conservation and two optional categories.
The first step for a school is to form a Green Schools Team, comprised of two or more staff members such as teacher(s), principal, other administrator and/or custodian, along with interested students or a student group such as the ASB or an environmental club. Parents also may be involved. This team will work together to develop a plan, conserve resources, and influence behavior changes.
School districts form a Green Schools team comprised of district staff such as the resource conservation manager, facilities manager, maintenance supervisor, or similar position. The purchasing manager, superintendent, capital projects director, interested principals, teachers, parents and students also can join the district team.
Check the How it Works page to find out how to sign up. Once a Green Schools Team has been formed at your school or school district, fill out the program application form to start receiving assistance from King County.
