Put a roof over someone's head!

Age group: All Ages
Geographic area: Seattle/South King County

Home ownership is one of the primary ways that families in the United States are able to secure a better future for themselves. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit homebuilder dedicated to ending substandard housing in King County and around the world by building simple, decent, and safe homes that low-income families can afford to buy.

When you volunteer with Habitat for Humanity of Seattle/South King County you have an opportunity to select how you'd like to help, or talk to someone at the volunteer department to design your own project. Some ideas to help you begin are:

  • Nuts and Bolts Frames – Decorate the outside of the frames using the hardware (nuts/bolts/nails) that go into making Habitat homes. Create a picture for the inside of the frame. Think about what it would be like to be homeless and how important it is to you that you have a home. The frames can be used as thank you gifts for volunteers and homeowners.
  • School Reporter – Talk to a partner family about how Habitat has impacted them, write about their experience and publish one of their reflections in a school newsletter/newspaper. This helps all students and their community become involved and educated about what it is like to live in a substandard housing environment.
  • Cards – Decorate blank cardstock with pictures of your home and what home means to you, signing the bottom of the card with your name and age. These cards will be used for thank you cards for volunteers and sponsors.
  • Gifts from scrap wood – Make wooden key holders, picture frames, picture boards, cutting boards or doorstops on site. Site crew collect pieces for the group to pick up. These gifts can be donated to the families at the dedication.
  • Habitat for Humanity Club – Form a Habitat for Humanity Club to raise money, share news through a school newsletter or meetings and build houses.
