Seattle Youth Garden Works

Get Down and Dirty!
www.sygw.org

Age group: Grades 5-12
Geographic area: Seattle

Seattle Youth Garden Works (SYGW) is an education and employment program for homeless and low-income youth. The employed youth work at SYGW’s garden sites, operate a small business, and market their produce at city farmer’s markets. This program helps young people earn an income and learn new life and work skills, in addition to promoting the importance of urban gardening and environmental awareness. Your class can help! SYGW operates "work parties," events for volunteers to help in the gardens for an afternoon, especially during the planting and harvesting seasons. This project is interesting, helpful, and dirty! Get to the root of many issues and grow awareness in your class by offering service learning time to those involved with Seattle Youth Garden Works.

For more information, contact SYGW's Volunteer Coordinator at 206-525-1213 x3135 or by email.

Connects to issues: Poverty, Equity, Environment, Sustainability, Food Security
