Age group: Grades 5-12
Geographic area: Seattle
How different is life outside the United States? Learn about rural Afro-Caribbean culture in the Dominican Republic, the island nation where Columbus first landed. In this economically poor country, many young people do not have things we take for granted, like desks, books, and access to school. Through a presentation that includes slides, music, arts, and a brick made from Dominican soil, you’ll learn about Dominican culture and the work that Sister Island Project is doing to build a school there. Then you'll develop a plan and raise money to "Buy a Brick" and help get this school built. You'll also collect donations of art and school supplies to send to students there. You'll see photos of the construction progress and the supplies you send. You and your family members can also consider participating in a volunteer service trip to the Dominican Republic.
