With your help, the United Nations Environment Programme's Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign has a goal to plant at least one billion trees worldwide each year! Planting trees helps mitigate climate change because trees sequester carbon, a major cause of climate change.
Recognizing that there are many tree planting systems around the world, the Billion Tree Campaign proposes to unite these efforts in both rural and urban areas. Individuals, youth groups, schools, community groups, local authorities, and national governments are all encouraged to enter a tree planting pledge using this online form. Each pledge can be anything from a single tree to several million trees.
Once you have pledged to plant you'll need to arrange for the tree planting, for instance by contacting your school's facilities crew or a local parks department. Then enter your planted trees in the online count and you'll receive a certificate of involvement.
The Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign website records the ongoing tally of pledges and planted trees, and publishes photos and accounts showing what registered campaign members have achieved. The site also provides help in planning your tree pledge, links to appropriate partner organizations best equipped to give locally tailored advice, information about reforestation and other tree-related issues, and facts and figures about the Billion Tree Campaign.
