King County Green Teams
Form a team to help make the environment cleaner and greener!
Age group: Grades K-12
Geographic area: King County
Does your school want to take on a project to help the environment become a cleaner, greener place? If so, form a Green Team of students and at least one teacher. Green Teams can be formed at either the elementary or secondary level. Your Elementary School Green Team could start a food composting program, create and maintain a worm bin, organize a Waste Free Lunch Day, or plan an eco-friendly car wash. The Secondary School Green Team can design a carpool project, plan and plant a garden for the northwest environment, or start a plastic bottle reduction and recycling campaign.
To help Green Teams complete these projects, King County Solid Waste Division provides assistance including:
- Advice - If you need help thinking of ideas or planning a project, the King County Green Team Specialist is available to answer your questions or provide information for a specific project.
- Classroom Visits - If you need assistance to get your project started, a specialist is also available to come to your classroom for project workshops, free of charge, Monday to Friday. Green Team project workshops may focus on starting a worm bin, conducting a litter clean-up, planting native gardens, improving your school recycling program, or other topics.
- Mini-grants – Funding up to $500 is available to help defray costs of the project.
- Publicity and Recognition - Green Team actions are worth rewarding! Twice a year, King County recognizes and rewards Green Teams that have completed projects. Teams can earn certificates as well as water bottles made from recycled milk jugs. Your team’s projects will also be highlighted in King County's Class Act newsletter for teachers.
