By growing your own food you can reduce your carbon footprint, a major cause of climate change, by reducing the amount of transportation (using less oil and producing fewer emissions) that it takes to get food onto your plate.
Can you think of a better way to learn about the living world than engaging with it directly? A school garden can become a classroom in which to conduct hands-on investigations and explore questions such as: How do plants grow? How does pollination work, and who are the pollinators? What kinds of insects are needed (or not) for a healthy garden? What is the difference between fruits and vegetables? What are the benefits of eating locally grown foods? Gardening and plant-based learning open a door to discovery, while allowing you and your classmates to grow healthy food for your school lunches or hungry people in your area.
The School Garden Wizard provides information and resources for every step in the planning and implementation of your school garden Learn how to present the case for a school garden to your principal. Then find information for designing, building, and planting the garden. Finally, find the resources to build a network of support within the school and your community for maintaining and keeping the garden growing. The website includes curricular connections to various academic subjects and educational standards.
