How can we address biodiversity loss?
We can increase knowledge of biodiversity loss in global communities by participating in programs like The Green Wave, an international campaign to save tree diversity. 2010 is "The International Year of Biodiversity". In order to protect existing biodiversity, citizens and governments alike need to manage their natural resources sustainably. As Jan Pronk, Special Envoy for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, said, “Biodiversity is humankind’s life insurance.”16 To keep this life insurance, it is necessary to conserve and maintain protected areas for species as well as create economic alternatives for those who live in and depend on biodiversity hotspots.
